46年前の昨日、Queenの'A Night at the Opera'(「オペラ座の夜」)がリリースされたそうです。
「オペラ座の夜」といえば、"Bohemian Rhapsody"が収められているロック史上に燦然と輝く名盤。
"Bohemian Rhapsody"以外にも、バンドを搾取してきた誰かさんへの恨みが込められた攻撃的な"Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)"、芝居がかった歌い方が面白い"Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon"、ジョンが奥さんへの愛を歌詞にした"You're My Best Friend"、相対性理論(もしくはウラシマ効果)を扱った"'39"、ボードヴィル調でSEも凝ってる"Seaside Rendezvous"、フレディがかつての恋人メアリーに向けた愛を歌った"Love of My Life"などなど、名曲揃いです。
今回はそんな「オペラ座の夜」から、ブライアン作の"The Prophet's Song"を和訳しました。
彼が病気療養中に見た夢を元に、旧約聖書でおなじみの「ノアの箱舟」の要素を取り入れて完成させた曲です。歌詞中'Fly and find the new green bough / Return like the white dove'とある部分はまさに「ノアの箱舟」そのままです。*1
ちなみに、タイトルにある「預言者」とは、聖書において「神の〝言〟葉を〝預〟かる〝者〟」という意味*2。今回歌詞にも出てくる「予言者」とは別物です。
